Ditcham Park School offers a broad and balanced education appropriate to its pupils with the freedom to deliver a curriculum that is constantly reviewed and evolving, based on best practice.
Pupils’ preferred learning styles are acknowledged and reflected in classroom teaching. All pupils benefit from being taught music and PE by specialist staff and from using the specialist facilities. As they progress through the school there is also specialist teaching of art, design and technology, drama, science and modern foreign languages. Gifted and talented pupils are recognised with the provision of extension and enrichment activities, whilst there is a highly regarded learning support unit for pupils with mild early learning difficulties such as dyslexia. In the classroom, work is appropriately differentiated, whilst aiming to promote self-esteem.
Reading is an essential tool for learning. We aim to foster a love of books by accessing both fiction and non-fiction. In Reception through to Year 5, pupils are regularly heard to read on an individual basis. The three classes in EYFS (Reception) and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2) enjoy ease of access between the indoor and outdoor learning areas, and between the three classes. This supports pupils developing at differing rates and allows for a seamless transition between these two educational stages. The curriculum is delivered through a vibrant, integrated cross-curricular approach with a focus on practical activities, allowing pupils to feel a sense of purpose in their learning.
Key Stage 2 (Year 3,4,5 & 6)
At the start of Transition (Year 3), pupils progress from an infant environment to a more structured junior school day. Emphasis on the core subjects of Mathematics and English is maintained. Additionally, during the course of a week, the wide variety of subjects, including art, music, French, Spanish, drama, PSHE, PE, history, geography, science and RE give every child the chance to shine. ICT is taught as a discrete subject and used as a cross-curricular tool to broaden understanding. Subjects largely follow, and in some areas further broaden, the National Curriculum guidelines.
The pupils are ability set for Mathematics and aspects of English. The curriculum is enhanced by appropriate visits and visitors as well as an extensive range of clubs and activities, sporting fixtures and residential trips which contribute to creative and spiritual opportunities.
