BBC Ditcham newsroom was alive with energy, enthusiasm and drive on Thursday 21st March as our second form journalists produced the day’s news like the professionals. Pressure was certainly on to make the deadline of 2.00pm for filming and 4.00pm for editing ready for live links with BBC. The schedule for the day was a busy one, verging on hectic, as the journalists selected and researched their stories and then scripted them appropriately according to content. The running order was the next task, whilst consideration of backdrops for filming and camera technique posed further issues. Nevertheless, with comments such as ‘I would like to pursue this as a career’, ‘I work best under pressure’ and ‘we must meet the deadline’, the Ditcham journalists certainly came up with the goods!
The 2013 BBC Ditcham is viewable on the school website under ‘News’, then BBC report. Please watch it! Our amazing pupils had just 4 hours to respond to orders from the BBC, research stories, script them, agree the running order, choose an appropriate setting and then film. The ICT manager, Mr Mitas and assistant Mr Cracknell, certainly shared the pressure by making sure the Ditcham programme was available to the BBC despite an incredibly tight deadline. Ms Davies, the librarian, was also a major player in the completion of this all-consuming initiative.
Doing the Job for Real – BBC Weather Report
Kieran Meehan, a second form pupil, was given the opportunity of a lifetime – a day at the BBC studios in Southampton preparing the weather report for live television! Mrs Cripps from the modern foreign languages department supported Kieran, as not only did he face the daunting task of appearing in front of BBC cameras, but he also had to communicate in French.
This short film was produced by BBC professionals as a reminder for those involved of the fun they had behind the scenes. (The on-air version was live in March 2014.)
Please be aware, they may well be out and about selecting and reporting on stories near you!!
