The Family Fun Quiz Night saw some 80 parents, staff and children vying for first place and the coveted prize of tickets to Staunton Country Park, wine, Cocoa Moon chocolate and Mooka icecream vouchers. The evening started with a delicious sausage and mash supper – and many thanks to Graham Reed of Pinnacle Foods who generously donated the O’Hagan sausages for the event. After apple crumble and icecream and five fun quiz rounds later, a Form 1 table of Macintyre and Dentten families stomped into first place. Some of the quiz questions were very revealing – who would have known that Mr Connolly is quite keen on topiary and has a life-size sheep named Hector in his garden? or that Mr Ainsworth captained Matt Prior in the First XI at Brighton College? Many thanks to the Friends team of helpers who prepared supper and ran the quiz!

The Friends of DPS recently hosted a Jubilee May Fair Garden – with a barbeque, donkey rides, jazz music, lots of fun activity stalls, grand raffle, cream teas, bouncy assault course, cakes, candy floss – and more! It was a fabulous afternoon in the walled garden and lots of families and staff came up to school to celebrate our May Fair with a Diamond Jubilee theme.

The recent Bingo and Auction Night run by Friends was a great family occasion – fun bingo games with some fabulous prizes and an exciting auction to end the evening. Some 140 parents and children attended the night, and together, we raised funds needed to buy new camping stoves and expedition tents for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Many thanks to all who generously supported this event, by donating auction and bingo prizes, contributing to the fund, participating on the night or helping out – all agreed it was an amazing evening!

What do the Friends do?

Three things.

Firstly we create an atmosphere for parents to get to know each other. This is particularly important in a school which is geographically isolated.

Secondly, we organise social events for parents, pupils & staff

Thirdly we raise money to buy things that are not directly required by the school curriculum but do enhance the life of the school. For example we have bought a digital camera & printer, made a significant contribution to a new piano, funded a PA system for use at school events, and even bought a flag pole which you will see as you drive into school.

Anyone who is a 'Friend' or a pupil can make suggestions for purchases.

September 2011 saw our fantastic Mamma Mia sing-along family evening – complete with disco and Beach Bar, tombola and some spectacular outfits!
