Year 3 – (Transition)

Transition is the beginning of Key Stage 2. Pupils follow a more subject-based curriculum, taking part in activities that are tailored to their academic level. They are helped to learn through individual, class and group-based activities with lots of practical reinforcement.

Throughout the year, the pupils are encouraged to become independent learners, working to their full potential in a happy, fun and caring environment. Most lessons are taught by the class teacher, with PE and music taught by specialist staff. All pupils learn to play the recorder and many find that this is a good time to start instrumental or vocal lessons.

Apart from mathematics and spelling, all lessons are taught in mixed ability groups with differentiated activities to help support and extend the pupil’s learning. The pupils are heard to read individually at least three times a week and are given the opportunity to share books daily.

Lessons are enhanced with a variety of practical activities, both indoors and outdoors. Many of these activities give pupils the opportunity to develop problem solving skills through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths). They are also complemented by numerous visits and trips each term. For example, when studying the Celts, the pupils spend the day at Butser Ancient Farm and experience first-hand some aspects of life in Celtic times. Back at school, the Celtic theme continues with the pupils making bread like the Celts, dyeing wool using natural ingredients and weaving.

ICT is an integral part of the curriculum. Pupils have regular access to the computer suites to reinforce mathematics skills and to carry out topic-based research. They work with Word for Windows, learn how to create and use databases and also create and alter images using Image Blender.

After a busy day at school, we only set a small amount of homework that reinforces the work done during the day. This involves reading, practising spellings and working on mental mathematical skills. We feel that it is important that the pupils have time to pursue other interests after school, or just relax and spend time with you.
