Year 5 – (Middle Juniors)

Year 5 is known as Middle Juniors at Ditcham Park School. Middle Juniors is an action-packed year, where our pupils face a variety of exciting challenges, both social and academic.

We recognise the ability of pupils to take greater responsibility for their independent learning.  To support this, the day to day teaching structure changes from being largely class-based to one where children benefit from specialist teaching within subject areas.  The pupils also have to organise themselves for moving between rooms, which is excellent preparation for the transfer into Seniors.  In Middles, pupils benefit from Spanish and French lessons, taught by Modern Foreign Languages staff, as well as continuing with the specialist Music and PE teaching.

This is the first year when pupils look forward to a formal daily homework task, in addition to the already established daily routine of practising times tables, spelling and reading.  Pupils have their own homework diary, in line with Upper Juniors and Seniors. This is also used for home/school communication. In addition, pupils and parents are able to log in to Show My Homework which gives specific details of what the children have been told in class.  We enjoy teaching and learning together as a whole year group with events such as the Christmas Mathematics Challenge, our ‘Famous Person’ presentations, Biscuit Day and Aztec Day, to name but a few!

The creative approach to learning continues in Middles, and the school grounds are utilised as much as possible as a trigger to understanding, enjoyment and learning.

Middle Juniors relish the educational visits which complement our topics, this year including a trip to the Winchester Science Centre, the Mary Rose Museum and Cobnor Activities Centre.  Throughout the year there is a strong focus on social skills and we provide the pupils with the tools they need to develop, through circle time and role play.  This is all done within a nurturing and secure classroom environment.
