Year 5 – Middle Juniors at Ditcham Park School

Year 5 Petersfield

Year 5, known as Middle Juniors at Ditcham Park School, is an action-packed and exciting year where pupils face a variety of stimulating challenges, both social and academic. It is a time of increasing independence, growing confidence, and plenty of opportunity for creativity.

Each child has their own Chromebook, which is used as a tool in every lesson and supports pupils as they develop responsibility for their independent learning. The teaching structure evolves from largely class-based learning to one where specialist subject teaching is introduced. Children begin to move between classrooms – excellent preparation for their future transition into Seniors. They enjoy French lessons taught by Modern Foreign Languages staff, alongside specialist Music and PE, adding breadth and variety to their curriculum.

For the first time, pupils look forward to a formal daily homework task, in addition to their established routines of reading, spelling, and times tables practice. A homework diary helps to build independence and organisation, while our digital platform Show My Homework  https://www.satchelone.com/ keeps parents and pupils informed of tasks and celebrates house point achievements.

Middle Juniors enjoy a lively programme of creative and collaborative learning, from sending messages to astronauts on the International Space Station with the Astro Pi Challenge, to mathematical puzzles, animation workshops, and Biscuit Day and pop-up books in Design and Technology. Class assemblies and presentations help pupils grow in confidence as performers and public speakers.

Learning extends well beyond the classroom. Pupils explore our beautiful school grounds, take trips such as Winchester Science Centre, and enjoy a residential visit to Cobnor Activities Centre. Alongside academic growth, we place strong emphasis on social skills, supported through circle time, role play, and a nurturing environment where every child feels secure and valued.

Middle Juniors is a year full of discovery, independence, and joy in learning.
