Mathematics at Ditcham Park School

Our aim is to ensure that every pupil leaves Ditcham Park School as a confident, capable and enthusiastic mathematician.

Mathematics is a core subject at Ditcham Park School and an essential part of a broad and balanced education. Strong numeracy skills are fundamental to everyday life, further study and the world of work, and we believe that every pupil should develop the confidence to use mathematics effectively and without fear. We want our pupils not only to become mathematically proficient, but also to appreciate the creativity, challenge and enjoyment that mathematics can offer.

We provide a high-quality mathematical education for every pupil, with teaching tailored to individual needs, abilities and aspirations. In the Senior School, pupils are taught in ability sets by highly qualified, experienced and enthusiastic teachers. Alongside their regular lessons, we provide opportunities for pupils to collaborate and apply their mathematical knowledge in different ways through our ‘Big Maths’ events. These whole-year-group activities involve mixed-ability teams tackling engaging challenges, from outdoor trigonometry to problem-solving and revision relays.

We encourage pupils to take increasing responsibility for their own learning. Digital platforms such as MyMaths and MathsWatch provide opportunities to consolidate learning, revisit key concepts and extend understanding independently. The department is also well resourced, with a wide range of textbooks, revision materials and practical resources to support pupils at all stages.
All pupils in Years 10 and 11 study the Pearson International GCSE in Mathematics (Specification A) (4MA1). Pupils who are on track to achieve a grade 7 or above have the opportunity to study the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics (8365), providing additional challenge and allowing pupils to explore mathematics in greater depth. Pupils who demonstrate a particular passion and aptitude for higher-level mathematics may also have the opportunity to study for the Level 3 FSMQ in Additional Mathematics.

Problem-solving, mathematical reasoning and mathematical rigour are embedded throughout our curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections between different areas of mathematics and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar and challenging problems. This develops not only mathematical fluency, but also the resilience, logical thinking and confidence needed to tackle increasingly complex problems.

We are proud to offer a strong programme of mathematical enrichment that is open to all pupils. Everyone is encouraged to take part in the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) individual challenges, providing an opportunity to experience stimulating and unfamiliar mathematical problems beyond the classroom. We also participate in UKMT team challenges and competitions against other schools, where pupils develop their problem-solving skills, teamwork and mathematical resilience. Our pupils have achieved considerable success in these competitions, reflecting the enthusiasm and talent within the department.
