Our aim is to ensure that every pupil leaves Ditcham Park School as a confident and capable mathematician.
Mathematics is a core subject at Ditcham Park School. The basic skills of numeracy are essential to every member of society and, together with basic literacy, should be the cornerstone of any formal education. Too many people retain a fear of mathematics that they developed in school; our pupils learn to find maths fun!
It is our aim to provide the best mathematical education possible for each pupil, tailored to their individual needs and ability. To this end, students in Seniors are taught in classes set on ability by well qualified and enthusiastic teachers. We also hold ‘Big Maths’ events where the whole year group work in mixed ability teams to solve problems such as outdoor trigonometry or revision relays.
MyMaths and MathsWatch are software supports which have been purchased by the department to enable students to revisit work and extend themselves independently. The department is well stocked with text books and resources.
All Form 4 and 5 pupils study the 9-1 GCSE following the OCR J560 specification. As well as studying towards their GCSE, top set students will also complete the FSMQ Additional Mathematics programme and will be given the opportunity to enter for certification in this qualification as well.
In preparation for GCSE, problem-solving and mathematical rigour are embedded in the work carried out by pupils in all curriculum stages.
We enter all our top set mathematics students into the UKMT (UK Mathematics Trust) individual challenges and take part in team challenges against other schools, often with considerable success.
