Languages continue to thrive at DPS. Despite the declining take-up of modern languages in the maintained sector, we are pleased to report that most pupils in our years 10 and 11 study French, with an increasing number studying German throughout the school.
The 2009 ISI report noted the “excellent results at GCSE in foreign languages” (100% A* to C over the last 7 years) and that “the most able linguists demonstrate a high degree of fluency and confidence”
The Modern Languages Department is headed by Mrs Anne Coleman with Mlle Josy Baillet, Mrs Nadine Alexander-Digby and Mrs Rachel Hewett in the French section.
French is taught to all pupils in the first year of the Senior School in two mixed ability sets. In the second year, pupils are split into two sets according to ability and the upper set begins the study of German. At the end of Form 3 the vast majority of pupils continue to GCSE with one or both languages.
This year we extend languages further into the Junior school as Lower Juniors (Year 4) begin a new interactive French course. The dance element is going down particularly well! Both French and German are taught to Years 5 and 6.
We aim to instil a love of languages and lay the linguistic foundations for travel and work abroad and for further study at college or university. Teaching throughout the school aims to be personal and stimulating, with much use made of the interactive whiteboard, video and audio material and the internet.
Exchanges are arranged annually for our 14 and 15 year olds, some as far afield as Corsica and Morocco. More exciting trips are being planned.
