Open Morning Saturday 2nd October 10am-1pm
Geography at Ditcham Park School
In Geography we aim to stimulate pupils' interest in their surroundings and to increase their understanding of the world around them. We also seek to develop informed concern about the quality of the environment and explain issues that are of topical significance. The department maintains a news board of current issues as reported through the press and media.
As Ditcham Park School is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, full use is made of the grounds and the surrounding area for fieldwork. For example, pupils will learn the skills of fieldsketching Ditcham Park's panoramic views, survey the grounds, study its microclimates, and visit a local farm to study the land use pattern.

In addition, Forms 1-4(Years7-10) undertake supervised field work visits. At Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9), this complements the department's schemes of work and at Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11) it facilitates the coursework requirement for the GCSE.
Fieldwork visits
Form 1(Year 7): Urban Study of Portsmouth
Form 2(Year 8): Patterns of 'Land Use on a local farm'
Form 3(Year 9): Tourism in Southsea
Form 4(Year 10): Coastal Visit to Hayling Island and Resource Managment at Queen Elizabeth Country Park
GCSE
Geography is a popular GCSE option with a strong academic record, consistently achieving a 100% A*-C pass rate.
The Department follows the AQA Specification A Scheme, which includes a 25% coursework element. The coursework commences at the end of the Summer term in Form 4(Year 10), additional fieldwork data is collected in the summer holidays, and the enquiry is written up during the Autumn term of Form 5(Year 11). From September 2009 the GCSE syllabus will include a 25% ‘controlled assessment’ element rather than 25% ‘coursework’. Controlled assessment will follow a similar timescale to coursework. The noticeable difference is that the written work will be completed within lesson time, rather than at home.
