DITCHAM PARK SCHOOL

Where every child is known and valued

Open Morning Saturday 2nd October 10am-1pm

Welcome to the unique learning environment that is Ditcham Park School. Our wonderful setting on the top of Ditcham Down, with acres of playing fields, surrounded by farmland, with views across to the Isle of Wight enables every child to enjoy every day. Once inside, the Victorian mansion the panelled staircase reminds many children of a famous magic school although our lessons are along more conventional lines.

Venture into the classroom and you will find the teachers at Ditcham are committed to giving individual attention to every child, where the wide variety of subjects from reading to cooking encourages each of them to find their niche and fulfil their own potential. The teachers promote positive learning where the children receive praise and encouragement in all their efforts, ensuring that they are keen to try new skills and their minds are receptive to learning.

The classes are small, with classroom assistants working alongside the teachers with the younger children 'to provide appropriate support for the younger children ranging from mathematics to art. Lessons are frequently complemented by trips and by inviting speakers into school. Recently, the fire service came to school with a fire engine and caused great excitement.

Book Day

Junior Book Day

School should be exciting and on our return in September the whole school is involved in a 'Welcome Back' activity. Over the years these have included a blacksmith in residence for a week, sculptor in residence for a week, Indian musician and dance workshop through to mini beasts and poets. Against this backdrop, Ditcham delivers a broad range of subjects, focusing on high standards of numeracy and literacy whilst not ignoring education in the wider sense. Creativity is encouraged and all of the children have weekly sessions of music, drama and dance with specialist staff. Children who are wishing to extend their talent can have individual instrumental lessons within the school day. Lateral and logical thinking is promoted through 'Go' and team building clubs, and problem solving activities. Physical wellbeing is catered for in PE lessons and the fencing club is a popular activity with both girls and boys. Ditcham at the time of its founding in 1976 was the only local independent school founded in a genuine belief of the benefits from co-education and there are equal opportunities for all.

The children are encouraged to participate in ownership of their school and the House system provides the children, from the youngest to the oldest, with the opportunity to involve themselves in the democratic process by electing their House Captains and supporting their House in a variety of ways.

Ditcham recognises the individuality of all children and the friendly, family atmosphere inspires self-confidence in those at an age where their self-esteem can so easily be destroyed. Children are quick to follow and learn from example and the kindness, consideration and respect that they enjoy from the staff and older pupils is reflected in their own behaviour. This is in line with the Christian non-denominational ethos of the school.
