Ditcham Park School - Pre-Prep (Year 1)

In year 1 our children are encouraged to become independent learners who can access the curriculum at their level. This is achieved through the correct provision of resources, accessibility of resources appropriate questioning, worksheets that are often tailored to the child's ability, a high level of expectation, clear learning objectives and a lot of praise…

This class marks a key transition from the Reception class, where the teaching style fully embraces free flow learning, to a more routine but play-centred approach. We create a happy, warm and friendly atmosphere in which all members of the class feel secure and able to ask questions, share their thoughts and further their own learning through practical and ‘hands-on’ activities.

This is achieved through ensuring good accessibility to a wide range of resources, appropriate questioning, worksheets that are tailored to the child’s ability, a high level of expectation, clear learning objectives and lots of praise. Whenever possible, all subjects, including maths, literacy and ICT, are taught under the umbrella of topic work. This is important for infant children as they can make more sense of their work when it is placed within a familiar context.

Our setting lends itself to a whole array of stimulating lessons, from geography to art, and maths to science.

If it’s a sunny day then you may well find that we will be taking our lesson al fresco! The awe and wonder of the outdoors is continued when the class visit Birdworld and Staunton Country Park.

Pursuits such as baking and sewing are offered throughout the year, giving a refreshing flavour of more traditional skills that children still very much enjoy today. Homework remains very informal at this stage.

However, it is expected that each child reads for around 10 minutes per evening in a relaxed atmosphere and practises his/her weekly spellings.
