Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Pupils in Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 are given the opportunity of taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.
A recent independent study by the United Learning Trust ranked the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as the highest non-academic activity that employers look for when recruiting. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is available at three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold.  Within each level there are four sections: Volunteering, Skills, Physical Recreation and Expedition.

The Volunteering Section  encourages service to individuals and to the community.  Popular choices at Ditcham Park include helping voluntary sports&n bsp; coaches at local children's sports clubs; helping in a local charity shop; taking part in an event or sporting challenge to raise money for a chosen charity; recyling to raise money for Naomi House Childrens Hospice; helping at Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Rainbows, Brownies or Guides; helping in the infant school; managing the school's dofE kit store; instructing younger members of the cycle club in cycling techniques, and maintaining bicycles for the cycle club; helping in animal rescue centres; and conservation.

The Skills Section  encourages the discovery and development of practical and social skills and personal interests.  Popular choices at Ditcham Park include playing a musical instrument, cookery, IT, cycle maintenance, art and drama.

The Physical Recreation section encourages participation and improvement in physical activity.  Ditcham Park pupils benefit from a wide range of sporting activities available.

The Expedition Section encourages a spirit of adventure and discovery through the preparation for, and carrying out of, an adventurous activity as part of a team.  The expeditions are unaccompanied, self-reliant journeys with an agreed aim.  The experience is fun, challenging and character-building, and provide an opportunity for the development of team building skills. Recent expeditions have been held in South Downs, Isle of Purbeck, New Forest, Royal Forest of Dean, Brecon Beacons, and Scotland. All pupils take part in a comprehensive basic First Aid Course which results in the award of a recognised First Aid Certificate.
